Cuban First VP Heads Delegation to 7th ALBA Summit

CUBA, October 16, 2009. Cuban First VP Jose Ramon Machado Ventura is heading the island’s delegation to the 7th Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of the Americas (ALBA) beginning today in Cochabamba, Bolivia, reported Cuban national TV.

Also attending the meeting in representation of Cuba is the Vice President of the Council of Ministers Ricardo Cabrisas and other government officials.

During the two days of the summit, the heads of State and representatives of the governments of Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Ecuador, Honduras, Dominica, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Antigua and Barbuda will discuss topics of regional and international interest.

ALBA is a regional integration mechanism that emerged as an initiative by then Cuban president Fidel Castro and Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, in Margarita Island in 2001. The initiative was finally materialized on December 14, 2004, during a meeting between the two leaders in Havana. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
