Hugo Chavez Stressed Joining of New ALBA Members at 6th Extraordinary Summit

CUBA, June 25, 2009.  Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez inaugurated on Wednesday the 6th Extraordinary Summit of the Bolivarian Alternative for The Americas (ALBA) in Maracay, in the state of Aragua.

During his inaugural speech, the Venezuelan head of state stressed: “we increasingly shaped this geopolitical space, and today, when we’re marking the 188th anniversary of the historical Battle of Carabobo, which sealed Venezuela’s independence from Spain´s colonial rule, we meet to make the incorporation of three new states to ALBA official”, adding that their incorporation significantly strengthens this mechanism of regional integration, the Bolivarian News Agency (ABN) reports.

The nations that joined ALBA were: Ecuador, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Chávez said that the incorporation of these states was the main focus of the Summit, although delegates also tackled other issues.

“We thank you for your courage and decision, which encourages all of us to continue building this alternative mechanism of profound political content”, stressed the Venezuelan head of state in reference to the decision of the three Caribbean nations of joining ALBA.

The ALBA is a social, economic integration project, based on mutual respect and solidarity, which aims at finding integral solutions to the problems and needs related to the development of its member nations. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
