Ecuador to Officially Join the ALBA Agreement
VENEZUELA, June 3, 2009. Venezuelan President, Hugo Chávez, announced today that Ecuador will soon join the Bolivarian Alternative for the Peoples of the Americas (ALBA) agreement at a meeting which should be attended by all member nations.
In statements made in the Dando y Dando TV show of the Venezolana de Televisión Network, Chávez said that Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa had confirmed the interest of his country in joining this regional initiative.
He announced that the meeting for welcoming Ecuador as a new ALBA member will take place next June 24, on the Carabobo battlefield, where Simon Bolivar defeated the Spanish army, leading to Venezuela’s independence.
He noted that this agreement is different from any other previous initiative in the region. The ALBA agreement is especially aimed at the struggle against poverty and social exclusion, and comprises Venezuela, Nicaragua, Dominica, Bolivia, Cuba, Honduras, and Saint Vicent and the Grenadines.
