Rafael Correa Stresses the Importance of Ecuador Joining ALBA

ECUADOR, June 25, 2009. The Ecuadorian president, Rafael Correa, emphasized today the importance of his country joining the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA), whose members will unite their voices to change this unjust international order.

In Cochasquí, Ecuador, Correa stated that they would join ALBA "to have the voices of the countries resolved to change this unjust international order heard in the international forums".

Correa announced that he will travel to Venezuela next Wednesday to attend an extraordinary summit of this bloc. The inclusion of Ecuador as full member will be formalized during the summit.

The Ecuadorian leader pointed out that from ALBA, they will be able to cope with the international arbitrations presented before a center attached to the World Bank.

According to Prensa Latina (PL), at the ALBA summit, to be held on June 24 on the historic Carabobo Battlefield, other countries such as San Vicent and the Grenadines and Antigua and Barbuda will join ALBA, besides Ecuador.

These countries, together with Bolivia, Dominica, Cuba, Honduras, Nicaragua and Venezuela, means that the organization, that promotes cooperation under the principles of unity, will now have nine members.

The summit has a symbolic element for it coincides with the commemoration, in the same place, of the battle that sealed the independence of Venezuela from Spain on June 24, 1821.
