Bolivian President Meets Cuban Minister of Higher Education

BOLIVIA, August 24, 2009.- Bolivian President, Evo Morales, met with Cuban Minister of Higher Education, Miguel Díaz-Canel, reported Prensa Latina News Agency.

Díaz-Canel said he was very impressed by the work of the Bolivian president, who is of Aymara origin, and is the leader of the process of transformation of this Andean country.

At the meeting, which was also attended by the Cuban ambassador to Bolivia, Rafael Daussá, they spoke of public works, housing, education, health, and other issues on the agenda of the Social Council of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of the Americas (ALBA), which started on Friday in La Paz.

Díaz-Canel, who is also a Politburo member, noted that in December 2008, Bolivia had become the third country in Latin America free of illiteracy, joining Cuba (1961) and Venezuela (2005).

"Now it’s time to continue," he said, "with the sustainability of the literacy and post-literacy programs."

"Post-literacy programs," he added, "will allow raising the education level to primary education, high schools and train the future professionals of Bolivia."
