Cuban sports cooperation in Suriname increases

SURINAME, August 31, 2009. With the arrival of four Cuban sports coaches Suriname has increased its sports cooperation with Cuba. With these new coaches the South American country now has five highly qualified Cuban specialists in various sport branches. Three of them are specialized in athletics; one is a volleyball coach, and the other a chess expert.

The Surinamese sports authorities have expressed their interest to expand the Cuban sports cooperation to other disciplines, as well as to train national teams.

The Cuban coaches will not only work in Paramaribo, capital city of Suriname, but also in other districts of the country. They are working together with the Directorate of Sport Affairs in Suriname and with the national federations for athletics, volleyball and chess.

Surinamese sports authorities expect that the expertise of the Cuban coaches will result in improved sports performances of the country.

Cuba also offers cooperation to Suriname in the fields of health and education. A Cuban Medical Brigade is stationed in the country as well as a team of Operation Miracle which offers free ophthalmological care. Cuban experts assist the Advanced Teachers Training Institute (IOL) in a program to train Spanish language teachers. (Cubaminrex-Embacuba Suriname)
