Marti One of the Greatest Thinkers of the Americas, Said Martin Torrijos CUBA, January 5, 2009. Panama's president, Martin Torrijos highlighted today Jose Marti’s greatness, as he made a tour of a memorial dedicated to the Cuban National Hero in Havana. The Panamanian leader wrote in the Book of Honor upon concluding a visit to the museum: “Recognizing the greatness of one of the greatest thinkers of Cuba and the Americas.” Torrijos appreciated aspects of the life, political and literary work of Jose Marti (1853-1895), who is considered the most brilliant and universal of Cubans. He was the creator of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and one of the organizers of the Necessary War for the liberation of the island from Spanish domination. The director of the monument's complex Haydee Diaz Ortega gave the Panamanian president two facsimile editions of Marti’s Versos Sencillos and El Ismaelillo. Torrijos had previously placed a floral wreath before the monument to the Cuban National Hero located in Revolution Square. As part of the Panamanian delegation that arrived in Cuba on Saturday are the First Lady Vivian Fernandez de Torrijos, Panama’s First Vice President Samuel Lewis Navarro, and the president of the National Assembly of Deputies, Raul Rodriguez.
