President of Mexican Senate Ends Visit to Cuba

CUBA, January 26, 2009. The president of the Mexican Senate, Gustavo Madero, and his accompanying delegation, concluded on Sunday a visit to Cuba at the invitation of Ricardo Alarcon, President of the Cuban National Assembly (Parliament).

During their stay in Cuba, the visitors met with Alarcon as well as with other high-ranking officials such as Jose Ramon Fernandez, VP of the Cuban Council of Ministers; and Bruno Rodriguez, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.

According to Granma news daily, they also met with Havana Historian Eusebio Leal, who is the president of the Cuba-Mexico Inter-parliamentary Friendship Group.

During their meetings, the Cuban representatives thanked the visitors for the permanent support of the Mexican Congress, which has approved several resolutions against Washington’s US economic blockade of Cuba and in favor of the liberation of five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States since 1998.

For his part, Madero said that recent visits to Mexico of Alarcon and Cuban FM Felipe Perez Roque contribute to the strengthening of bilateral relations.

During their visit, the Mexican delegation paid tribute to Cuban National Hero Jose Marti and to Mexican hero Benito Juarez. They also visited scientific centers such as the Finlay Institute in Havana. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
