Chilean President Pays Tribute to Cuban National Hero

CUBA, February 11, 2009. Michelle Bachelet, President of Chile, laid a wreath at the monument of the Cuban National Hero, Jose Marti, at the Revolution Square in this city, as part of her official agenda in Cuba. Bachelet, accompanied by Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs Felipe Perez Roque, was briefed about the historical square and its areas; she later toured the Jose Marti Memorial which treasures pictures, documents and personal paraphernalia of the Cuban Independence Hero.

The Chilean President along her accompanying delegation, made up of ministers, parliamentarians, majors, entrepreneurs and artists learnt about the life and work of the greatest Cuban thinker through photos, historic documents and his works editions.

The tribute marked the beginning of the South American President’s official visit to Cuba at the invitation of the Cuban head of state Raul Castro.

On Wednesday Bachelet will meet a tight working agenda that includes the official welcoming ceremony at the Revolution Palace, official talks with the Cuban president, visits to the Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering Center and to the Foundation of the New Latin American Cinema. She will also attend the inauguration of a film exhibition at Casa de Las Americas Cultural Center.

President Bachelet arrived Tuesday evening in Havana for her official visit, which will conclude on Friday. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
