Paraguayan President to Cuba CUBA, June 2, 2009. Paraguay's President Fernando Lugo starts Tuesday an official visit to Cuba on an invitation from his Cuban peer Raul Castro, national press reported. His agenda here includes talks with the Cuban head of State, and visiting sites of economic, scientific and historic interest. Lugo was born in San Solano, department of Itapua, on May 30, 1951 and has been of catholic faith since he was very young. He entered the Society of the Divine Word seminary in 1970, and studied at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic University of the Paraguayan capital, where he received a certificate in Religious Sciences. Lugo resigned from priesthood in December 2006, to present his candidature for the presidency of Paraguay, and requested the Vatican to continue his membership in the Catholic Church. Lugo won the April 20, 2008 elections with 40.82 percent of votes. This ended 61 years of the Colorado Party in power. (Cubaminrex- PL)
