Channel 5 News of Belize interviews Cuban Ambassador Belize, February 27, 2009. The Cuban Ambassador to Belize, Manuel Rubido, offered an interview to local channel 5 news concerning topics of the Cuban Collaboration with the Caribbean nation. Among the issues was the recent departure of a group of 20 Belizean students to initiate their medical career at ELAM school of medicine. The Scholarship Program was also reviewed, and it was informed that currently 194 Belizean students are pursuing different studies in Cuba, 132 of them in the medical field. Another relevant issue was the eye care program called Operation Miracle that since its beginning in Belize in 2005 has benefited almost 1800 patients from this nation. The Cuban Ambassador informed that in 2009, the number of patients that have traveled to Cuba under the program has increased with a weekly frequency of 18 patients.
