Salvador to Resume Diplomatic Ties with Cuba CUBA, March 19, 2009. Salvadoran President-elect Mauricio Funes announced on Wednesday that his country will resume diplomatic relations with Cuba. "During the launch of my presidential campaign I said that I would resume diplomatic relations with Cuba, and I will do it," Funes told reporters during a press conference in San Salvador. According to Granma news daily, he added that he will do it as soon as he assumes power because "I can only do it after I have taken office." Once Cuba and El Salvador has re-established diplomatic ties, all the Central American nations, formerly a geopolitical region subordinated to the interests and orders of the United States, will have diplomatic relations with the Caribbean archipelago. Funes, who won the presidential election last Sunday as a candidate of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) in El Salvador, will assume power on June 1, 2009, thus putting an end to 20 years of government by the right-wing Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA).
