Cuba and Barbados Strengthen Bilateral Relations

CUBA, May 16, 2009. The 6th Cuba-Barbados Joint Commission, which opened during the visit to Havana by Prime Minister David John Howard Thompson, wound up with the signing of a cooperation protocol aimed at strengthening relations between both Caribbean nations.

The document was penned by Cuba´s first deputy minister of Foreign Trade and Investment Orlando Hernandez Guillen and by the permanent secretary of Barbados´ Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Teresa Marshall.

Hernandez Guillen said that both parties identified potential areas to strengthen relations and to be consequent with the principle that in the Caribbean region we all are sisters and brothers.

Meanwhile, Marshall thanked Cuba for the granting of a number of scholarships to Barbadian youths and she expressed her interest in receiving advice by Cuban specialists in the protection against natural disasters.

During the working sessions of the commission, which also addressed subjects like healthcare, education and culture, both countries signed a bilateral accord between foreign ministries plus another two protocols in the sectors of sports and science, technology and the environment.
