European Union – Rio Group Meeting kicks off in Prague

Czech Republic, May 13, 2009. The Foreign Ministers of the European Union –EU- and the Rio Group of Latin American and Caribbean countries started a meeting in the capital of the Czech Republic with an agenda that includes the world´s economic crisis and renewable energy sources.

The Joint Declaration of the 14th Ministerial Conference of the European Union and the Group of Rio will reaffirm their opposition to unilateral coercive measures in violation of international law.
In the gathering´s final document, though the US economic blockade imposed on Cuba for nearly 50 years is not mentioned explicitly, references in this direction, such as the rejection of all forms of protectionism of rich countries, are put forward.

Another significant aspect indicates the need to change production and consumption patterns, as well as the need to have access to sustainable energy sources for development, including the UN Millennium Goals.

Regarding the world economic and financial crisis, the EU and the GRio consider relevant discussions held at the G20 Summit and other meetings, including the top level UN Conference on the issue. (Cubaminrex- RHC)
