Cuban VP Esteban Lazo Meets with his Ecuadorean Counterpart

CUBA, October 20, 2009. Esteban Lazo, Vice-president of the Cuban Council of State, met on Monday afternoon with Lenin Moreno Garces, Vice-president of the Republic of Ecuador, who is now on an official visit to the island.

In a cordial and friendly atmosphere, the two parties reviewed the development of bilateral relations, and ratified their interest in continuing to boost and diversify the bonds existing between the two countries, as well as in strengthening cooperation in sectors like health and education.  Likewise, they held exchanges on other regional and international issues.

The two leaders coincided in the need of working for the unity of nations in the region as an essential element to face the challenges imposed by the world economic crisis, the effects of which fall with greater strength on the peoples of the developing world.

The Ecuadorean VP acknowledged the island’s support of the efforts made by the government of current President Rafael Correa to carry on with a social project that allows for a better quality of life for his country’s citizens, and thanked Cuba for the training of hundreds of Ecuadorian professionals on the island, who will contribute to the progress of their nation.

For his part, Lazo thanked the fraternal people of Ecuador for its solidarity with Cuba’s struggle against the US blockade and for the release of the five Cuban antiterrorists unjustly incarcerated in the United States.
