CUBA, April 1, 2010. - Ronald R. Venetiaan, President of Suriname, highlighted this Wednesday in Paramaribo the good relations between his country and Cuba, as well as the mutual support of both nations in the international arena. The president spoke at a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in the capital of Surinam, in which Ike Desmond Antonius was sworn in as first resident ambassador in Havana. In his speech, Venetiaan stressed that the South American country has several Cuban cooperation programs in the areas of health, energy, education, culture, agriculture and sports. With the appointment of an ambassador in Havana, Cuba and Suriname raise their level of bilateral relations. In April 2006 the Cuban embassy was established in Paramaribo. Venetiaan has visited Cuba twice, while Lygia Kraag-Keteldijk, Minister of Foreign Affairs has done it on five different occasions.
