What the Cuban Doctors are Doing is Extraordinary

Said Edmond Mulet, Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN in Haiti

HAITI, April 23, 2010. - "For many years I have learned firsthand of the extraordinary work done by Cuban doctors throughout Haiti. Wherever we went we found them working, sometimes in difficult conditions, without water, without electricity, with only the equipment they carried because health facilities in Haiti are very poor. Now with the tragedy of the earthquake on January 12, this Cuban effort has more than doubled. "

This was acknowledged on Wednesday by the Guatemalan Edmond Mulet, Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations Organization (UNO) and Chief of Mission of the UN Stabilization in Haiti (MINUSTAH), at a meeting with Ricardo Garcia Ambassador Cuba here, with the head of the Cuban Medical Brigade.

Mulet said he had "to congratulate the Cuban government, but especially doctors, all Cuban personnel working here without any kind of facility, dedicated with love to this country and this people that has suffered so much."

He said the draft plan to have hospitals across the country has accelerated. "Cuba is coordinating, on behalf of ALBA and other countries, this effort with the Haitian Ministry of Public Health. It is important that we, the international community, work with the State and through it. We are always finding excuses for not working with the State. So we tended to do so with other NGOs, and so we also weakened the Haitian State. It's time to change the way we work in Haiti, to do as Cuba does, through the institutions, the ministries, of what exists as a state and government here. "

On the challenges facing Haiti, Mulet told Granma that while most of the population has received tarpaulins, marquees and tents, they are still too weak to endure a prolonged rainy season. "We are building camps with good coordination from the international community, but we must accelerate the work. What worries us most is still the subject of the roofing, food security, health. We have enormous challenges." (Cubaminrex – Granma Daily)
