More Aid to Rebuild the Haitian Health System

CUBA, August 4th, 2010.- The 4th Haiti-Brazil-Cuba Tripartite Meeting, which wound up on
Wednesday in this capital, gave a boost to a project for the reconstruction of the Haitian
health system, dismantled by the January 12 earthquake.

As part of the meeting, which began on Monday, participants visited the policlinic located on 15th and 18th streets, in Vedado neighborhood, where they were given more details on the Primary Health Care System and the Comprehensive System for Medical Emergencies.

One of the objectives of the meeting was to assimilate experiences working out successfully in Cuba, with the objective of implementing them in Haiti, by adapting them to the needs of the neighboring people now going through a precarious situation.

Jaques Hugues Henry, Dean of Port-au-Prince’s Faculty of Medicine and head of his country’s delegation, acknowledged the virtues of the links existing between policlinics and communities, the humane treatment given to patients, and the Cuban approach of treating health and not the disease.

Also of interest for participants in the tripartite meeting was the visit, also on
Wednesday, to the Institute for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology (INHEM), where they were received by Deputy Health Minister Lorenzo Somarriba and the center’s director, Dr. Mariano Bonet.

The meeting was an excellent opportunity for exchanges to cooperate with a new program in these specialties, incorporate health laboratories and activists to control hygiene and vectors, and carry out educational work in Haitian communities. Cuban specialists are working in seven departments of this Caribbean nation, including 30 graduates in hygiene and epidemiology and 10 in microbiology, while two mobile labs to control vectors will soon be opened.

Fernando Assoni, from the Brazilian delegation, underlined the importance of working together with other nations providing cooperation and with the Haitian health authorities, and offered the help of his country’s professionals to contribute to the recovery of Haiti, hit by a devastating earthquake at the beginning of this year.
