Ecuadorean Ambassador Expresses Backing of Fidel’s Call

CUBA, August 11th, 2010.- Ecuadorean ambassador to Cuba, Edgar Ponce, backed on Tuesday in this capital the call made by Commander in Chief Fidel Castro to prevent a nuclear war, resulting from the US and Israeli war threats against Iran.

During the meeting held at Havana’s ALBA Center to mark the 201st anniversary of the Ecuadorean independence, attended by representatives from several diplomatic missions, Ponce took up again the call of the leader of the Cuban Revolution to the peoples and presidents of the world to persuade US President Barack Obama, so he doesn’t give a war a green light.

The orator recalled that the Revolution of Quito of August 10, 1809, known as the first cry for independence in South America, constitutes a significant historic event that preceded the founding of the Republic of Ecuador, the reason for which this Latin American country celebrates its independence day on this date.

Ponce brought to mind the heroism of a popular army composed at the time of artisans and farmers, along with Ecuadorean elites, which defied the Spanish royalist forces to achieve the nation’s autonomy.

Today, this example guides the process of changes carried out in Ecuador, headed by President Rafael Correa, where privileges are for children, the deprived sectors and the poor, asserted the diplomat.

Havana City Historian Eusebio Leal recalled that Haiti was “the necessary bad example” that boosted revolutionary changes in Latin America, which began with indigenous uprisings in the southern part of the continent.

Likewise, in the year of the bicentenary of the independence of several Latin American nations, Leal recalled national heroes like Simon Bolivar, the Liberator; Jose Marti; Eloy Alfaro; Antonio José de Sucre; and the hero without a tomb, Tupac Amaru, indispensable in this process “of painful march towards liberty.” (Cubaminrex - ACN)
