Ibero-American Summit Will Recognize Effectiveness of Cuban Literacy Method

CUBA, December 2nd, 2010.- The 20th Ibero-American Summit, scheduled for Argentina on December 3-4, will highlight the effectiveness of the Cuban literacy method ‘Yo si puedo’ (Yes, I Can), used in several countries of the region and which has helped over four million people learn to read and write.

According to Prensa Latina news agency, the acknowledgement is included in one of the documents approved by Ibero-American cooperation coordinators for the Final Declaration of the Summit.

The text, to be signed by the heads of State and Government, urges all Ibero-American nations to work hard and carry out literacy campaigns so that there are no illiterate people in the region by 2015.

The document also calls for the strengthening of existing literacy programs and developing others as well as increasing multilateral, bilateral and regional assistance in this area.

The Cuban method was created by professor Leonela Relys. It is economically feasible, flexible, effective and simple in approach producing results that can be assessed in a short period of time.

This year’s Ibero-American Summit will take place under the slogan “Education for Social Inclusion.” (Cubaminrex - ACN)
