Haiti Quake Death Toll Over 70,000

HAITI, Jan 18, 2010 .- Over 70,000 deaths, 250,000 people hurt, and 1.5 million others homeless are the preliminary figures of the earthquake that devastated the Haitian capital and nearby cities, local authorities informed.

Iran Sends 30 Tons of Humanitarian Aid to Haiti // UN to Increase its Troops in Haiti // Venezuela to Send Food and Medicines to Haiti The quake destroyed over 60 percent of buildings in the capital, and thousands in Jacmel, Carrefour, and Leogane cities.

According to the State Secretary for Literacy, Carol Joseph, over 70,000 bodies have been buried, but the exact number of victims is very hard to determine because thousands of bodies are still among the rubble.

Authorities and humanitarian collaborators agree the death toll could exceed 150,000.

The Haitian government decree a 30-day national mourning in memory of the victims, and imposed a state of emergency until the end of the month. (Cubaminrex - Prensa Latina)
