HAITI, Jan 19, 2010. - A heartbreaking panorama of death and destruction continues in Haiti on Tuesday after a week of the devastating earthquake that destroyed the capital, while the massive arrival of international aid carries on. Hundreds of doctors from Cuba, Brazil, Spain, the United States and other nations also continue taking care of an increasing number of injured people despite the terrible conditions they have to carry out their work. The existing chaos prevents from establishing an approximate assessment of the tragedy, but some calculations bring about that the number of dead people could reach 200 000. The situation forces to bury people in common graves with masses of corpses, with no register, in the cemeteries and on the outskirts of the capital. Officials of the Ministry of Health indicated that the number of injured could reach 250 000 while nearly one and a half million people lost their houses and many of them wander around the streets looking for help. UN officials fear that desperation in population for the lack of food and water leads to outbreaks of violence or sacking, which are kind of frequent lately. The international community mobilized en masse for the sending of humanitarian aid, but its distribution comes up against organizational problems and the massive destruction of the infrastructure of the capital. Multilateral organizations and representatives from many countries agreed, on Monday in Santo Domingo, to hold an international conference for the reconstruction of Haiti. In the Declaration of Santo Domingo, the Summit "United for a Better Future for Haiti" specifies that the meeting will take place in the Dominican Republic and will be called by the European Union, but the date has not been set yet.
