UN recognizes Cuba's role in liberation of Africa

 

CUBA, June 29th, 2010.-   Ali Treki, president of the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization (UNO), thanked Cuba and Fidel Castro for the role played in the liberation of Africa, on Monday in Havana.

We will never forget what Fidel and Cuba did for Africa, said the leader of Libyan origin at the headquarters of the Foreign Ministry, where he was greeted by Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, Foreign Minister of Cuba, reported AIN.

Ali Treki also praised the contribution of Cuba, as a member of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), in the common struggle against Zionism and the right of peoples to self determination.

For his part, Rodriguez Parrilla underlined the importance that Cuba attaches to multilateralism in international relations and expressed the need for the international organization to exercise all powers under the UN Charter to defend world peace.

The Cuban diplomat also appreciated the repeated resolutions condemning the U.S. fifty year blockade against the island, adopted by the UN General Assembly.

Treki is starting an official visit to Cuba during which he will meet with government officials. Monday he was received by Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, First Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers.

The President of the General Assembly of the UN took office in September 2009, replacing the Nicaraguan, Miguel D'Escoto.
