Juventud Rebelde spoke with the cultural advisor at the Cuban Embassy in Santiago de Chile, Rubén Pino, shortly following the earthquake. “Luckily, no one at our embassy was injured or hurt. We only experienced some damage to televisions, computers, paintings and tables that broke under the strength of the earthquake,” said Pino. “We are still without electricity or water and are at friend’s house until normality is restored. “We are fine, but after the quake hit at 3:41 a.m. until now there have been 10 aftershocks. “It was horrifying! My daughter was the first to notice and said to me ‘Dad our apartment is shaking! I felt the walls and the apartment began to move like a box of matches being shook. “We moved to the frame of the main door of the apartment and waited for the quake to pass. It lasted two minutes, the most agonizing and unpleasant minutes of my life. I though we were all going to die, with the sound of breaking glass and other things all around us.” “When it stopped, I put on a pair of shorts and told everyone to follow me with a jacket and a minimum of clothing to not lose any time and we left the building to find shelter in a square in front of our apartment.” (Cubaminrex – Juventud Rebelde) |
