Solidarity with the Cuban Five in Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia, May 6, 2010. A solidarity activity was held at the Cuban embassy on Wednesday may 5th, 2010; to highlight the continued imprisonment of the Five Cubans in United States prisons.  The Five are René González Sehwerert, Antonio Guerrero Rodríguez, Fernando González Llort, Gerardo Hernández Nordelo and Ramón Labañino Salazar.

The Five are falsely accused, by the United States government, of committing espionage, conspiracy against the United States and other related charges and have been unjustly imprisoned for almost twelve years

A declaration demanding the release of the Five, denouncing the blockade against Cuba, condemning the undignified and unjust media campaign unleashed against Cuba, its government and its people, demanding the ceasing of the double standards and deliberate political manipulation that includes Cuba on the arbitrary and spurious list of countries sponsoring of terrorism, and demanding justice and condemning the continued protection of terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, who enjoys total impunity and free movement through the streets of Miami, was adopted and signed by 48 participants attending the activity.

The gathering was addressed by Ambassador Hugo Ruiz Cabrera and the president of the Cuban residents in St. Lucia, Taimy Martinez del Toro, who read the declaration in Spanish, bro. Velon John, chairperson of the Committee in Defense of the Cuban Five, who read the declaration in English, and bro. Matthew Lubin, who read recent correspondence from the Cuban Five.

The declaration will be forwarded to the president of the United States, Barack Obama.
