Parliamentarians Analyze Latin American Integration

CUBA, May 27, 2010.-  The Second International Seminar of the Latin American Parliament (PARLATINO) began on Thursday at Havana’s Hotel Nacional with the participation of 13 parliamentary groups that will discuss the achievements and new challenges faced by the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of the Americas (ALBA) regional integration and cooperation bloc.

During the inauguration of the two-day event, the president of the Cuban National Assembly, Ricardo Alarcon, welcomed participants and said the meeting aims at contributing to the common effort to build “the Americas of ours.”

Attending the seminar are personalities such as the president of the Ecuadorean Parliament, Fernando Cordero; the president of the House of Representatives from Saint Lucia, Rosemarie Husbands Maturin; and the Venezuelan ambassador to Cuba, Ronald Blanco La Cruz.

The acting director of PARLATINO, Amilcar Figueroa, described the event as an opportunity to foster projects of integration and unity for the region.

“The current world situation demands integrating and coherent proposals from all Latin American leaders in accordance with the magnitude of the challenges lying ahead of us,” he added.

Figueroa noted that, after only five and a half years, ALBA has attained significant achievements with a process in favor of social development, the training of human resources, literacy and post-literacy campaigns, the provision of health services, the encouragement of food production, and a better and more just distribution of the wealth.
