Press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Suriname regarding Third Caricom – Cuba Ministerial Meeting, on Havana , Cuba, 17 September 2010 On past 17 September the third Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the CARICOM – Cuba cooperation framework was held in Havana, Cuba. The Ministers of Foreign Affairs discussed among other subjects the cooperation between CARICOM and Cuba, integration and cooperation between Latin America and the Caribbean region, the reconstruction of Haiti and subjects on the international agenda. In order to further strengthen the cooperation the countries agreed to identify areas of priorities to be included in the CARICOM –Cuba cooperation program. The areas of priorities are based on possibilities and needs. With regard to this the possibilities for strengthening of cooperation in the areas of healthcare, development of human resources and disaster management were pointed out among others. Furthermore it was agreed to increase cooperation in the regional as well as international forums in order to deal with communal global challenges, namely in among others the Rio Group, the Association of Caribbean States and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States. It was also emphasized that in dealing with climate change and the promotion of sustainable development, to continue putting pressure on the international community, especially the industrialized countries, in order that based on communal and differentiated responsibilities, commitments are kept with regard to the environment and development issues. With regard to the reconstruction of Haiti that was struck in January by a devastating earthquake, it was decided to keep on taking and supporting joint initiatives to handle urgent challenges and long term development. Hereby the necessity was emphasized of the involvement of the Haitian Administration and the honoring of commitments made by the international community. During this Ministerial Meeting two declarations were adopted containing the agreements made with regard to the CARICOM – Cuba cooperation and the reconstruction of Haiti.
