Statement of Friendship Association Suriname- Cuba against the blockade, imposed by United States. SURINAME, September 28, 2010.- In spite of the call of a large part of the global community and several resolutions of the United Nations demanding the ending of the already 52 years existing economic blockade, the US administration refuses to comply with this demand. The Friendship Association Suriname-Cuba promotes solidarity with the Cuban people. We thank Operación Milagro, a project that gives free ophthalmological care to thousands of Surinamese, even to those in the remote hinterland. We also refer to the many Surinamese who have been treated free of charge in Cuba. We refer to technical assistance in the area of sports by supplying coaches who work selflessly to support our youth. Support to scientific research at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname, support tot the People’s Music School, opportunities for university education of Surinamese. In the 65th General Assembly of the United Nations in New York, the case of Cuba is also on the agenda. Our President, His Excellency Desiré Delano Bouterse, will address the world in his speech to the Assembly on 25 September. The Friendship Association Suriname – Cuba has requested therefore in a letter to the President, to take on behalf of the Surinamese people a firm position in this matter. The head of state has also been requested to strongly support the demand for the immediate ending of the longer than fifty years existing inhuman economic blockade, and the unconditional release of the Cuban Five. In this period of solidarity, attention will be paid to this case through radio and television programs in Suriname. This Declaration of Solidarity is an obligation we have to the heroic Cuban people that despite its difficult economic situation has been able to support friendly nations support in various ways. On behalf of the Friendship Association Suriname- Cuba The Chairperson, Mrs. Nadia Raveles (Cubaminrex-Embacuba Suriname)
