Cuban Delegation Participates in a Regional Event on HIV

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO, 8 April, 2011.- A Cuban delegation comprising Dr. Mariela Castro Espín, Director of the National Centre for Sexual Education (CENESEX), Dr. Carilda Peña, Director of the Centre of Hygiene and Epidemiology of the Province of Santiago de Cuba and Dr. José Joanes, Epidemiologist of the National AIDS Programme, are participating in the Regional Consultation of the Caribbean on Universal Access to HIV Prevention, Treatment, Care and Support, organized by UNAIDS.

During the opening ceremony spoke, among others, Mr. Sam Condor, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Ms. Jan Beagles, Deputy Executive Director of UNAIDS, Dr. Ernest Massiah, Director of the UNAIDS Caribbean Regional Support Team and Mr. Rodger Samuel, Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago.

 Dr. Mariela Castro participated as a guest panelist and talked about the progress, difficulties and challenges in the treatment of persons infected with the virus of HIV in Cuba. In her speech Dr. Castro referred to the obstacle posed by the criminal economic, financial and commercial blockade impose to Cuba by the United States, in the development of programmes for prevention, treatment and care of HIV/AIDS.

The regional consultation was attended by several Ministers and other representatives of Governments of the region, as well as members of civil society. (Cubaminrex-Embacuba Trinidad and Tobago)
