CELAC Summit Put Off for Later this Year. CUBA, June 30, 2011.- The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry issued an official call announcing that the Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAN, acronym in Spanish) has been postponed. The Venezuelan press release, published entirely on Granma and Juventud Rebelde newspapers, said the countries of the region agreed to set up, through the established consultation mechanisms, a new date for the Summit in Venezuela, within the second half of 2011. The meeting is summoned to put into practice the organism created to give a boost to regional unity and independence of Latin American and Caribbean nations. The press release says because Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is in the middle of the recovery process and under strict medical treatment –as it is widely known by the Venezuelan and international public opinion–, the government of that country, prior consultation with those of the rest of the region, agreed on putting off the Third Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean on Integration and Development la (CALC) initially scheduled for July 5-6, 2011 in Isla de Margarita. Through the communiqué, Hugo Chavez’ government thanks again Latin American and Caribbean highest leaders for confirming their participation in the event which is expected to become a historical event.
