Cuban Books at Dominican Fair

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, June 3, 2011.- At least 15 Cuban publishers are exhibiting and selling their books as part of the fourth and last stage of the Cuban Traveling Book Fair in this northeastern Dominican city June 3-5.

The fair is dedicated to promoting freedom for the five anti-terrorist Cuban fighters unjustly held in U.S. prisons.

The opening ceremony was attended by Cuban Ambassador Juan Astiasaran Ceballo and Consul Alejandro Padron Corral, parliamentary deputies Juan Compres and Olmedo Caba, and local authorities.

Participants also included the executive committee of the Cuban solidarity campaign in this province, as well as representatives of Casa Abierta, the Association of Journalists, the Union of Newspaper Workers, the Nordestana Catholic University and the Frente Amplio de Lucha Popular (People’s Struggle Broad Front-FALPO).

Speakers highlighted their active solidarity with Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez and Rene Gonzalez, internationally known as the Cuban Five.

The five men were detained in the United States over 13 years ago and are serving harsh sentences for gathering information on anti-Cuban activities planned by Florida-based terrorist groups.

The struggle for their immediate release goes on, said leaders of the solidarity campaign with Cuba, Dominican activists said.

The world must know the arbitrary nature of a legal system that considers itself a model for the world, they said.

Events at the fair include a lecture on Ethics and the Exercise of Journalism in Cuba, to be given on Sunday by Prensa Latina correspondent. (Cubaminrex-Prensa Latina)
