By Eva Barajas
HAVANA, May 31, 2011.- The 45th anniversary of the independence of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana was celebrated in Cuba with the presence of representatives of the Caribbean diplomatic corps accredited to Havana. Participating in the political-cultural meeting, held at the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), was Guyana’s ambassador to Cuba, Mitradevi Ali, along with students and descendants of Guyanese immigrants.

Enrique Roman, vice-president of the ICAP, stated that the celebration represents a commitment to consolidate solidarity between the two countries.

Mitradevi Ali stressed her country’s condemnation of the economic blockade imposed by Washington on the island for over 50 years now.  She also affirmed that Guyana supports the immediate release of the five Cuban antiterrorists unfairly incarcerated in the United States.

Located in northern South America, the Cooperative Republic of Guyana proclaimed its independence from British control on May 26th, 1966, and established diplomatic relations with Cuba in 1972. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
