Cuban Ambassador in Saint Lucia Meets with Local Media SAINT LUCIA, May 16th, 2011: An exchange with the Local Press was organized at the Residence of the Ambassador of Cuba in Saint Lucia in order to celebrate World Press Freedom Day. The Cuban Ambassadress on the Island, Lydia González Navarro, in her speech, highlighted the origins of the date and the decisive participation of the Movement of Non-Aligned countries which contributed to the United Nations General Assembly declaring May 3rd as the date to pay tribute to the fight for a new order in information and communications. In her opening words, the Cuban Ambassadress underlined that since then and up to now, a new order in communications and information keeps being a statement for Cuba and the Non-Aligned Movement in general, detailing the unequal Access to information in today’s world, where transnationals dominate 90% of the information being circulated and distorted and that they manipulate the news coming from the third world. At the same time that she denounced the successive media campaigns against Cuba and radio and television aggressions which have been upheld for more than 50 years, she thanked the local press for allowing the Saint Lucian people to have Access to the true voice of Cuba. For the Cuban part, Cuban officials responsible for the different groups of collaborators on the island were present, which allowed them to deepen Cuba’s solidarity duties in Saint Lucia.
