3rd National Meeting of the Association of Cuban Residents Held in Jamaica

JAMAICA, November 21, 2011.-  Last Saturday, 19th November, the Third National Meeting of the Association of Cuban Residents in Jamaica (ACRJ) was held in Montego Bay, concurring with the 2nd Regional Meeting held in the Dominican Republic.

In his opening speech, the ACRJ Vice-president, Osvaldo Cardenas, underlined the work carried out by the chapters the Association has established in the cities of Montego Bay and Kingston. Also on behalf of the Association’s executive board, Osvaldo Cardenas, read the report on the work undertaken during 2011 which explains the status of the execution of the Action Plan adopted in the 1st Meeting of Cuban Residents in the Caribbean (2010).

On behalf of the Montego Bay Chapter, Augusto Hernandez took the floor to mention the actions carried out and the achievements attained during the year. In addition, he urged the rest of the members to critically reflect on how the work of the Association could be improved so as to increase its activism and efficacy.

On the other hand, Ambassador Yuri Gala López highlighted the significance of this 3rd National Meeting and thanked the Association for the activism shown during the year, mainly, during the month of May –when relatives of our Five Heroes visited Kingston- and in the last four-month term, showing its activism all along the 6th International Campaign of Solidarity with the Five and against the unjust blockade. Moreover, Ambassador Gala Lopez encouraged the Association to increase its actions by using the new technologies and Internet social networks, as a contribution to the current battle Cuba wages against the blatant media campaign.

During that meeting, a documentary feature entitled “Defending the Truth”, was screened which allowed for an exchange of opinions on the actions the solidarity movement have been carrying out in solidarity with the Five, including the denunciation of the perilous situation Rene Gonzalez is facing. Likewise, the attendees expressed their support to the Plan of Action of the 2nd Regional Meeting and the text of the message of greetings and solidarity sent on the eve of the opening of the Meeting in Santo Domingo, was read.

Two declarations were adopted, one against the U.S criminal blockade and another for the immediate and unconditional release of the Five Cuban antiterrorists. The closing speech of this 3rd National Meeting was delivered by the ACJR Vice-President, who praised the fruitful debate held and the content of both Statements adopted.
