Cuban Ambassador in Guatemala Demands Release of the Cuban Five
.

GUATEMALA, August 31, 2011.- Cuba's ambassador in Guatemala, Roberto Blanco, during an interview for Guatemalan TV, demanded the immediate release of five Cuban compatriots, who serve harsh sentences in U.S. jails for fighting terrorism.

In the interview with the Guatemalan television network Canal View, Blanco updated the Guatemalan public on the current status of the Cuban Five case.

Known internationally as The Cuban Five, Fernando, Gerardo, Antonio, Ramon and Rene were arrested in the United States on September 12, 1998, and condemned to harsh sentences for monitoring the activities of Florida-based, anti-Cuban terrorist groups.

The Cuban diplomat also described the negative impact of the U.S. economic blockade on the lives of millions of Cubans.

In this regard, he clearly illustrated, how the US blockade impacts nearly every element of Cuba’s everyday life, from construction and industry materials to drugs needed for the treatment of cancer in children, which he added confirms the inhumanity of U.S. policy towards Cuba.
