The US Senate Finds Out that Radio Marti is Lying

By Angel Rodriguez

“Radio and TV Marti lie when they broadcast unfounded information”, admits the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, which recommended that the two stations should be definitively withdrawn from Miami and located in Washington, so they join the propaganda apparatus of the Voice of America (VOA).

When on May 19, 1985, the US Interests Section informed Cuba that Radio Marti broadcasts would begin the following day, the Granma newspaper published a statement that read: “Some day, the US people itself will be in charge of putting an end to so much selfish, foolish, blind and futile policy.”

That imperialist communication was purely formal, since the CIA had promoted and financed, since 1959, subversive radio broadcasts against Cuba by way of Radio Swan first and dozens of clandestine radio stations later -all of them from south Florida.

Radio Marti, as repeatedly denounced by Cuba, falsifies and distorts information and causes jamming when it invades the national radio space, with which it violates all international laws and regulations of the International Telecommunication Union and the International Space Law on this matter, and it’s a permanent source of tension of relations between the two countries.

In March, for example, Radio Marti and the rest of the radio stations located in US territory broadcast 2,185 hours of illegal transmissions every week, with the consent of federal authorities.

The radio station has also been characterized by bad quality information and for being a center where there has been “a lot of jobs for the boys”, where nepotism has been practiced, and where the money of US contributors has been lavishly squandered.

It’s estimated that from 1983 -when the organizational work began- to date, some 700 million dollars have been spent, and it has been the object of not few scandals due to corruption.

The senatorial commission itself, headed by John Kerry, identifies numerous mistakes in the two media outlets, “that have been broadcasting for decades against Cuba, with low journalistic level, negligible audience and lack of support of the Congress. The fact that Radio and TV Marti haven’t been able to penetrate the Cuban society or influence its government is disappointing.”

The end of Radio Marti, inaugurated on May 20, 1985, and created to generate tensions and conflicts, will be the garbage dump of history. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
