Daily Granma Exposes Dirty Campaign behind Cuban Prisoner’s Death
CUBA, February 27, 2010. - The Cuban daily Granma published Saturday an article by journalist Enrique Gomez Ubieta, which exposes the unscrupulous manipulation by counterrevolutionary factions of the recent death on the island of a prisoner, Orlando Zapata Tamayo.
The news article says that all human loss is painful and regrettable, but it reveals how a common criminal with a wide-ranging criminal record, which includes breaking and entering, misdemeanours, fraud, disorderly conduct and assault, among others, is turned into a martyr of the counterrevolution.
Ubieta also explains that the convicted offender, already with a long criminal record under his belt, then decided to adopt a political profile encouraged by his mentors, and went on a hunger strike leading to his death.
The article also notes that Orlando Zapata Tamayo received medical attention in a number of hospitals where health professionals spared no resources and efforts in his treatment. He was fed intravenously and his relatives were informed of each step until he finally died.
Contrary to ill-informed reports, Zapata Tamayo did not appear in the list of so-called political prisoners comprised by the former UN Commission on Human Rights in 2003 to condemn Cuba, Granma daily added.
As stated in the article, the inmate was exploited and somehow deliberately led to self-destruction, to meet other people’s political needs. This case is a direct consequence of the genocidal policy against Cuba, which encourages illegal emigration, as well as contempt and violation of Cuban law. (Cubaminrex - RHC)
