Surinamese Health Minister meets with Cuban ambassador
SURINAME, December 2, 2009. In a meeting with Andrés González Garrido, Cuba’s Ambassador to Suriname. Celsius Waterberg, Suriname’s Health Minister expressed his appreciation for the cooperation with regard to healthcare that Cuba offers to countries. In the meeting that took place at the Ministry of Public Health in Paramaribo, capital city of the country, the Minister also spoke highly of the scientific achievements of the island in the field of health.
During the meeting, the Minister spoke about his recent visit to Cuba were he attended the international congress Global Forum for Research in Health. Waterberg stated that during the scientific event in Havana he had meetings with his colleague the Cuban Health Minister Dr. José Ramón Balaguer Cabrera.
Waterberg also said that in spite of the economic blockade imposed by the United States against the island and the economic world crisis, Cuba has made significant advances in its health care system as well as in medical research.
The Cuban Ambassador stated that Cuba would continue cooperating with Suriname, with the presence in the country of the Medical Brigade and the Milagro Project. He also referred to the results achieved by these two Cuban projects and which were presented in the recent scientific workshop organized by the Cuban health professionals in Suriname.
