Surinamese Minister Praises Development of Cuban Medicine

Cuba, Dec 3, 2009. - Suriname’s Health Minister, Celsius Waterberg, praised on Wednesday in Paramaribo the island’s medical scientific development, as well as Cuba’s cooperation with that South American country.

While speaking with the Cuban ambassador in the capital of that nation, Andres Gonzalez, Waterberg made reference to his recent visit to Cuba, where he participated in the international meeting called Global Forum for Health Research, the Cuban Foreign Ministry’s web site reports.

During the meeting, that took place at the Surinamese Public Health Ministry, the minister pointed out that during the scientific congress in Havana he held talks with his Cuban counterpart, Jose Ramon Balaguer.

He said that on that occasion he also appreciated how, in spite of the US blockade, the island shows important advances in its health system and medical research work.

The ambassador underlined that the island will continue to cooperate with his country, with the presence of the Medical Brigade of the Comprehensive Health Program and with the Operation Miracle Project (of ophthalmologic rehab) in Suriname, the good results of which were recently shown during the scientific meeting organized by the Cuban voluntary workers there.

The Cuban Medical Brigade and the one working on the Operation Miracle Project in Suriname issued a declaration on the occasion of the Day of Latin American Medicine, marked every December 3rd, when Cubans celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Dr. Carlos J. Finlay, the discoverer of the mosquito that transmits the yellow fever.

Our best tribute to this day is to devote ourselves with determination, altruism and love to the noble profession of saving lives, following the examples of Cuba’s National Hero Jose Marti, Revolution leader Fidel Castro, and President Raul Castro, reads the text.
