Suriname. January 6, 2010. Three Cuban horn players are presently in Suriname to teach workshops. Their presence is part of the Cultural Agreement between Cuba and Suriname. The horn players, who are also teachers, will stay for almost six months in the country.
They already started their workshops with the horn players of the police band and the military band.”We are happy that these teachers are here to help us with the music education part of the integral culture policy. We want to learn from them, but it is an exchange so they can also learn from us”, said Stanley Sidoel, director of Culture. He hopes that the music sector will utilize the expertise of the musicians well. Music school such as the Effendi Ketwaru Music Schools and the National People’s Music School will also be involved in the project.
The plan is that also orchestras, bands that play dance music, and brass bands will get the opportunity to learn from the Cubans.
Also there will be probably visits to the districts to hold workshops.
Sidoel says that music was chosen as the first project because is known for it good musicians and especially its horn players. Cuba is known world wide for its various music institutes as part of the official education system. Through the years, Cuba had great musicians who influenced musical developments at world level. The internalization of salsa music for instances, says Sidoel, with the for this musical style characteristic horn sections is for an important part inspired by Cuba.
In Havana, Minister Wolf of Education signed a cooperation agreement in 2007 with his Cuban colleague Abel Prieto Jimenez. The signing was the most important activity of the official working visit of Minister Wolf. The cooperation agreement between Cuba and Suriname not only provide for exchanges of technical expertise to support cultural developments in each other’s country. In this context, Sidoel also had interesting talks in Cuba about other cooperation projects in the field of arts and culture education, literature, visual arts, theater and film. These will be developed further. (Cubaminrex – embacuba Suriname)
