Some 345,000 Haitians Treated by the Cuban Medical Brigade
HAITI, May 10, 2010. Cuba’s has already given medical assistance in Haiti -during the emergency situation and as part of the Health Reconstruction Program in than nation- to 345,689 patients in the over 110 days elapsed since the earthquake.
According to reports by the Cuban Medical Coordinating Group in the territory, more than 1,100 people, between Cubans and graduates and students from Havana’s Latin American Medical School (ELAM), are offering these services throughout that fraternal country.
Over 8,000 surgeries have been made during this period, as well as 1,629 deliveries.
Meanwhile, 73,510 Haitians have been vaccinated against tetanus and other diseases, and 74,657 patients have received rehabilitation services.
In coordination with Haitian authorities, the Cuban staff has also contributed to the program for the mitigation of the psychological and social damage caused by the earthquake, with 547 mental health actions that have included recreational activities, games and sports, among others, in which over 121,000 children and youngsters have participated.
These efforts are part of the fulfilment of the accords reached by the countries that are members of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA), to implement a project to rebuild the Haitian health system and provide it with equipment.
Both the physicians and the rest of the health staff that have been contributed their efforts over the last 11 years in an Integral Health Program in that country as well as the members of the Henry Reeve International Brigade, currently composed of by some 700 Cubans and graduates and students from ELAM, have provided systematic medical treatment to the Haitian population.
After arriving to an advanced stage of the declared immediate emergency, the members of this force in solidarity with the Haitian people now prepare to give continuity to their work, so as to achieve, as pointed out by Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, “a sustainable, efficient, especially important, and very economical health program for Haiti.” (Cubaminrex- ACN)
