’s Health Ministry Extols Work of Cuban Doctors

CUBA, March 11, 2010.-  Celsius Waterberg, Suriname’s Health Minister, highlighted the work carried out by Cuban doctors in that South American country.

In an address to participants in a farewell ceremony for the Operation Miracle brigade, held at the Public Health Ministry in Paramaribo, the nation’s capital, Waterberg thanked the Cuban government, on behalf of his government and people, for this project, which has successfully contributed to restore or improve the vision of thousands of patients in that territory.

Cuba’s ambassador in Suriname, Andres Gonzalez, pointed out that, since October 10, 2005, when the Operation Miracle project began, until today, more than 6,000 eye surgeries were performed there, and 26,000 patients had their vision checked.

The diplomat added that Operation Miracle has always had the support and cooperation of the Public Health Ministry and that it has received the acknowledgement of the population of that South American state.

For her part, Kenia Morales, head of the Medical Brigade of the Comprehensive Health Program (PIS), and Yordanys Fernandez, head of Operation Miracle, expressed their willingness to continue this humanitarian mission in Suriname, or wherever the services of these specialists are needed.

Cuba cooperates with this nation in the health sector, with a PIS medical brigade and with Operation Miracle. Also there are other Cuban voluntary workers, in the fields of education, sports and culture. (Cubaminrex-Cuban News Agency)
