Cuba to Continue Assisting the Needy.
UNITED NATIONS, December 15th, 2010.- Cuba reiterated on Wednesday that it will continue providing humanitarian assistance to the needy anywhere in the world as a matter of principle and ethics, rejecting any attempt of manipulation for profit or political purposes.
This stand was put forward before the UN General Assembly by Cuban permanent representative Pedro Nunez Mosquera during a session devoted to humanitarian and emergency assistance.
The diplomat said that such assistance must be provided without any imposition, and not to justify actions contrary to the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of States.
He said that the request and consent of States in need of humanitarian assistance is a prerequisite for its implementation.
He also stated that the UN system and the international community have an essential responsibility with developing countries to help them improve their capacities to respond to natural disasters.
Nunez Mosquera denounced the unfair international economic order as a cause for hunger and poverty, which place in a very fragile situation thousands of millions of people, who are also victims of natural disasters worldwide. (Cubaminrex - PL)
