Cuban Learning Method highlighted in Guatemala.

GUATEMALA, November 11, 2010.-  Guatemalan Education Minister Dennis Alonso highlighted the Cuban Learning method Yo Si Puedo (Yes, I Can) to teach illiterate people to read and write, and stated that it has helped greatly in the fight against this scourge in Guatemala, a country were 19.48 percent of the population is illiterate.

He stressed that the Cuban method is the most efficient technique of the eight used in the Central American nation since 2007 by the National Literacy Council.

Since the beginning of its use, 65,000 citizens have learned to read and write with this method, 52,495 corresponding to this year.

The methodology uses videos and makes the students do arithmetic operations.

UNESCO has already certified 10 municipalities, with less than 4.0 percent of illiterate people, as territories free from illiteracy, with the rest relating to ill or disabled people and those whose advanced age prevent them from learning. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
