Seychelles to benefit from Cuba’s climate change expertise
.

SEYCHELLES, 30th August, 2010.- Seychelles is getting help from Cuba to set up a climate change-related historical knowledge base so it can better draw up a strategy of adaptation and raise public awareness.
Friday’s presentation by the Cuban experts
Two Cuban experts in the climate change modelling and impact field are now in the country to lead relevant work alongside local experts.
They are Dr Amaury Alvarez Cruz, who specialises in mathematics, fluid dynamics and modelling, and meteorologist Oslovaldo Enrique Perez Lopez.
The project follows President James Michel’s visit to Cuba in November last year when he asked for help from the Cuban government in the field of climate change study, in particular an assessment of the impact of climate change and sea-level rise on some of Seychelles’ major islands.
The two consultants gave a presentation on Friday on similar work carried out in their native land. The meeting, at the Climate and Environmental Services office at English River, was attended by the national coordinator for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Wills Agricole, representatives of the Cuban embassy and local experts in the environmental field.
Mr Agricole said a study on sea-level rise will take about six month to complete, while the other phase involving an impact assessment will take a further half-year to finish.
He explained that emphasis will be put on the first phase, which will allow the authorities to identify the hot-spots and come up with necessary measures to adapt to the changes. (Cubaminrex-Embacuba Seychelles-Nation)
