Cuba to Send Health Professionals to Suriname.
HAVANA, June 9, 2011.- Cuba will send at least 55 doctors and other health workers to Suriname.
Surinamese officials disclosed at a press conference in Paramaribo that during President Desi Bouterse’s recent official visit to Havana, he and his Cuban counterpart Raúl Castro both agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas like health, agriculture and sports.
At the press conference, Suriname’s Health Minister Celsius Waterberg noted that the country has a severe shortage of skilled nurses, doctors and other medical specialists.
Official statistics indicate that per 1,000 inhabitants only “a half doctor” is available, while the situation inland is even worse.
Cuba will send 55 health workers to Suriname, among them general practitioners, pharmacists, oncologists, oculists and dental surgeons,
The Surinamese health minister also said that since his government is planning to build four new hospitals, for the next five years the country will need at least 96 medical specialists in various fields and skilled nurses. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
