Cuban Cooperants Fighting Cholera in Haiti Return to Cuba.

CUBA, March 14, 2011.- The members of the Henry Reeve Contingent, which fought the cholera epidemics in Haiti since November 2010, are arriving in Cuba with the satisfaction of having saved the lives of more than 17,300 people.

The first 65 Cuban cooperants, from the eastern part of the country, arrived in the International Airport Antonio Maceo carrying Cuban and Haitian flags and wearing t-shirts with the image of legendary Cuban-Argentinean guerrilla Ernesto Che Guevara.

During the welcome activity, held in the airport, the cooperants were given recognition for their altruistic attitude, by the hands of Lazaro Exposito, member of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party, the first secretary of the party in the province and other personalities.

On behalf of the rest of the cooperants, Nurse Ana Miriam Riera expressed her satisfaction with the work done in Haiti, and noted that the Cuban contingent achieved a lethality rate of 0,38 percent ––the lowest among the international forces fighting the epidemics.

She mentioned that Fidel Castro’s idea of creating inquiry groups made up of two doctors and three nurses was one of the factors that contributed to the success of the mission.

In total, the Cuban contingent run 3,713 visits to communities, where they detected 5,192 people suffering from the epidemics.

During the official welcoming activity, Jorge Alberto Miranda, a deputy of the National Assembly (parliament) stated that these cooperants have shown the importance of humanist medicine advocated by the Cuban Revolution.

The “Henry Reeve” Contingent was created in September 2005 and ––from its first mission on, in October, 2005, in Pakistan–– they have worked in 14 countries fighting the aftermath of natural disasters and other phenomena.
