Haiti: Cholera Mortality Rate Decreases Thanks to Cuban Cooperation.
HAITI, March 5, 2011.-– The cholera mortality rate in Haiti continues to decrease thanks mainly to efforts by the Cuban health brigade to halt the spread of the disease.
The overall mortality rate from the disease in the 67 health units run by Cuban health specialists dropped to 0.38 %, and no deaths from the disease were reported over the past 44 days.
On Friday, the Cuban health specialists treated nearly one hundred cholera patients, 12 of them at the Thomazaeu Hospital -– considered a national reference center.
In all the other health facilities operated by the Cuban health brigades, the island’s doctors treated less than 10 patients, which further corroborate the fact that the number of Haitians infected with the dangerous disease continues to decrease.
Since the first cholera outbreak in Haiti in October, the Cuban doctors have saved 70,890 lives.
Besides the Cuban personnel working in the health facilities, other teams –also made up of Cuban doctors and nurses- visit remote rural communities, where they have visited more than one million 300 thousand people and identified 5,170 cholera patients thus far.
The Cuban health personnel is also actively engaged in preventive actions, distributing chloride tablets to purify drinking water and educating the population about hygiene measures to halt the spread of the disease.
