New Dialysis Service in Saint Lucia Counts on Cuba’s Collaboration.
SAINT LUCIA, 23 March, 2011.- A new Dialysis Service was inaugurated this Friday, March 18th at St. Jude’s Hospital, in Vieux-Fort, located in the south of Saint Lucia. The inauguration was attended by the Minister of Health on the island, Dr. Keith Mondesir and other officials of that Ministry. On behalf of the Cubans, Dr. Barbarita Rodríguez, the Head of Medical Collaboration on the island participated in the activity. The new service counts on the participation of Cuban Nurses; whose prestige in that specialty is recognized as much by patients of the service as the Health authorities in Saint Lucia. The Cuban Nurses represent 62% of the work force in that field, while the Nephrologist of the Cuban Medical Brigade is the only one practicing in the country.
Within the Saint Lucian population, there is a high prevalence of chronic illnesses like Diabetes Mellitus and Arterial Hypertension (High Blood Pressure); Chronic Kidney Failure being one of the main complications.
The speeches of the Minister of Health and other Officials participating in the activity dedicated a special portion to underlining the importance of the help rendered by the Cuban Medical and Nursing Personnel, who for several years have been providing service in this area, as much in the medical attention to Saint Lucian patients as the transmission and transference of their experience to the Saint Lucian staff. Dr. Mondesir highlighted the high esteem which their Service of Excellence in the field of Kidney Transplants has achieved, that he had a chance to pay a visit during his stay in Cuba; indicating that he hopes to be able to create a service of this kind on the island in the future.
