South African President Expresses Concern for Cuba Due to Hurricanes
SOUTH AFRICA, October 4, 2008. -- South African President Kgalema Motlanthe expressed his sorrow for damages caused by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in Cuba.
At the official ceremony where the new Cuban ambassador to that country, Angel Villa Hernandez, was presenting his credentials, the South African president announced that his country would be sending a solidarity brigade to join recovery efforts on the island. President Motlanthe also expressed his willingness to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
Later that day, the newly appointed Cuban ambassador saw off the Alex La Guma Solidarity Brigade, made up of 30 members of different organizations, under the umbrella of the Association of Friendship with Cuba (FOCUS). A statement released FOCUS says that the solidarity brigade is one way to reciprocate for the support offered by Cuba in the liberation struggles of Africa.
Once in Havana, they will join the 50th Anniversary of the Cuban Revolution International Brigade, made up of representatives from several international organizations. (Cubaminrex- RHC)
